Shadow and Loss

Image of word Poem

I have a second shadow that never leaves my side
A space between, a place I’ve seen and love to keep alive
It’s always welcome, even though I find from time to time,
It can slip from my sight, and then I wander as if blind

I have a second shadow, a hole deep in my heart
A missing piece that once was you, a space that is still mine
Sometimes when I lie awake, I feel it beating in my mind
And rocks me off to sleep, and dreams I thought I left behind

I have a second shadow, it holds me up sometimes
If I fall into the dark, it whispers to my mind
The memories spread and pierce the night,  like tiny points of light
And fill up the empty parts of me, and lights me from inside

I have a second shadow, something lost I won’t let go
We were each other’s armour, protector, lover and friend
And now I feel exposed, the world can seem so cold
But still, my shadow keeps me warm, and it holds me close
